Welcome to the Del Mar track close to San Diego, as the second day for this 2025 Breeders’ Cup has commenced. It also represents the final day of top-level racing for the iconic rider Frankie Dettori, as he prepares for retirement following a remarkable 40-year career.

This race was expected as one of the stronger editions of this distinctive 7-furlong competition for female horses. Yet, veterinary inspections resulted in multiple withdrawals earlier today, including leading runners Sweet Azteca and Tamara.

Consequently, the field looks much smaller, but conditioner Bob Baffert has a major opportunity to claim a twentieth Breeders’ Cup victory. His entrants feature Richi along with Splendora, whereas Hope Road, winner of the Grade One Ballerina Stakes, is viewed as the primary threat.

A key European hopes, Arizona Blaze, was scratched yesterday, but focus stays on Khaadem and jockey Frankie Dettori, who aim to build on a recent Grade One win in the Woodford Stakes.
