RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of approach shafts leading to the site... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their valour," Healey added. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over the holidays. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an attack killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
