Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, after the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment after England were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
