A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People purchasing these treatments should be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a intense resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," described one woman.
This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
