Security breach at learning center
Educational institutions in the northern part of Nigeria have repeatedly come under attack for weapon-wielding factions

Weapon-carrying attackers have killed a teacher and abducted at least 25 students in an attack on a girls' secondary school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, police reports indicate.

The armed faction stormed the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State at roughly 4 in the morning local time on the start of the week, officials stated.

The armed individuals "confronted officers on duty in a shootout" before breaching the school's outer barrier and taking the pupils captive from their dormitory, an official report indicated.

One member of staff was killed while trying to protect the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now undergoing medical care.

Observers recounted a large group of attackers, referred to locally as criminal elements, who came shooting randomly to cause panic.

Area inhabitants told reporters that the attackers afterwards forced a contingent of young women into nearby bushland.

The police said they had deployed "supplementary tactical squads, in coordination with armed forces and community security teams" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and suspected escape routes.

In the last several years, educational institutions in Nigeria's north have regularly come under attack for armed groups, who often carry out abductions to request monetary settlements or gain negotiating power with authorities.

The assault in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge troubling the locality, causing relatives in Maga in a situation of anxious fatigue as they expect and desire their daughters' safe return.

Protection challenge in northern Nigeria has escalated dramatically in the last several months, with schools experiencing the greatest impact of the conflict.
