Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of fine saves to guarantee Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the referee ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton remain 14th and sit six points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of pitch

After a drab midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to score.

And the captain - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defensive duties, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the pair handled excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded slightly and fans flocked to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major concern for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of established strikers - had scored just one league goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to add to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having room and opportunity to reposition for a simpler shot that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped threatening balls into the Spurs box.
