Scandinavian Auto Mechanics Participate in Extended Industrial Action With Carmaker Tesla

Strike action at Tesla facility
This conflict centers on the authority for the primary labor organization to bargain for pay & working conditions on behalf of its members

Across Sweden, around seventy automotive technicians continue to challenge among the globe's wealthiest corporations – the electric vehicle manufacturer. The labor strike at the US carmaker's 10 Scandinavian service centers has currently reached its second anniversary, with little indication for a settlement.

One striking worker has been on the Tesla picket line starting from the autumn of 2023.

"It has been a difficult period," states the worker in his late thirties. With the nation's cold winter weather arrives, it is expected to grow more challenging.

The mechanic devotes each Monday with a fellow worker, positioned near a Tesla garage within an industrial park located in southern Sweden. His union, IF Metall, provides accommodation in the form of a portable builders' van, as well as hot beverages & light meals.

However it's operations continue normally nearby, at which the workshop appears to be at full capacity.

The strike involves a matter that goes to the heart of Swedish industrial culture – the authority of trade unions to negotiate pay & working terms on behalf of their workforce. This principle of collective agreement has supported labor dynamics across the nation for almost a century.

Currently approximately seventy percent of Swedish employees belong to labor organizations, and ninety percent are covered under negotiated labor contracts. Strikes in Sweden occur infrequently.

This is an arrangement supported across the board. "We prefer the ability to bargain directly with the unions and sign labor contracts," states a business representative from the Association of Swedish Enterprise employer group.

However Tesla has upset the apple cart. Vocal CEO Elon Musk has said he "opposes" with the idea of unions. "I simply don't like any arrangement which creates a kind of hierarchical sort of thing," he told listeners in New York last year. "I think labor groups try to create conflict within businesses."

Tesla came to the Scandinavian market back in the mid-2010s, and IF Metall has long wanted to secure a labor contract with the company.

"But they did not respond," says the union president, the organization's leader. "We formed the impression that they attempted to hide away or evade discussing this with our representatives."

She says the organization eventually found no other option except to announce industrial action, beginning on 27 October, last year. "Typically it's enough to issue a warning," says Ms Nilsson. "The company usually signs the agreement."

But not on this occasion.

Janis Kuzma, originally from Latvia, began employment with the automaker several years ago. He asserts that pay and conditions frequently dependent on the whim of supervisors.

He recalls an evaluation meeting where he states he was refused a salary increase on grounds he was "failing to meet company targets". At the same time, a colleague was reported to have been turned down for a pay rise because he had an "inappropriate demeanor".

However, some workers went out on strike. The company employed some one hundred thirty mechanics employed when the strike was called. The union states currently approximately 70 of their represented workers are participating in the action.

Tesla has long since substituted the striking workers with new workers, for which there is not occurred since the era of the Great Depression.

"The company has done it [found replacement staff] publicly & systematically," states German Bender, an analyst at a research institute, a think tank supported by Swedish trade unions.

"It is not against the law, which is important to recognize. However it goes against all established norms. But the company doesn't care about norms.

"They want to be convention challengers. So if somebody informs them, listen, you are violating a norm, they perceive that as a compliment."

The automaker's Swedish subsidiary refused attempts for comment in an email citing "record vehicle shipments".

In fact, the company has given just a single media interview in the two years since the strike started.

In March 2024, the Swedish subsidiary's "country lead", Jens Stark, informed a financial publication that it benefited the organization more to avoid a union contract, and rather "to collaborate directly with the team and give workers optimal terms".

Mr Stark denied that the decision not to enter a labor contract was determined by US leadership overseas. "Our division possesses a mandate to make our own such decisions," he said.

IF Metall is not entirely alone in its fight. This industrial action has received backing from several of other unions.

Dockworkers in neighbouring Denmark, Nordic countries & Finland, are refusing to process Teslas; waste is not collected from Tesla's Swedish facilities; while recently constructed charging stations remain linked to the grid in the country.

Exists one such facility close to Stockholm Arlanda Airport, at which twenty chargers stand idle. However a Tesla enthusiast, the president of an owner's club the Swedish Tesla association, says Tesla owners are unaffected by the labor dispute.

"There exists another charging station 10km from here," he says. "Plus we are able to continue to buy our cars, we can service our vehicles, we can power our electric cars."

Notwithstanding the industrial action the company's vehicles remain in demand in Sweden

With stakes high for all parties, it is difficult to see a resolution to the stand-off. The union faces the danger of setting a precedent should it surrender the fundamental concept of negotiated labor contracts.

"The worry is that this could expand," says the researcher, "and ultimately {erode
