Similar to bad weather tore through the northwest the prior day, Manchester City overwhelmed United away at the Etihad. It was a convincing three goal triumph for their manager's side thanks to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a performance that clearly signaled their leadership claims as they reinforced their position at the WSL pinnacle.

Back-to-Back Defeats for Manchester United

This outcome signalled consecutive league defeats for Marc Skinner’s side for the first time since May 2024, leaving them seven points off the league leaders with their trophy ambitions in serious doubt.

United’s capability to manage league and European soccer with a limited squad has been a frequently analyzed subject since they qualified for the Champions League. Considering the fixture list, it always felt like this was the matchday that would fully examine this ability. Sadly for the opposition, they seemed weary from start to finish, the landmark win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having had an impact.

Team Changes

Marc Skinner had sought to freshen things up with a a few adjustments. Toone, Terland, Janssen and Galton all provided energy, although the omission of the in-form Malard to the sidelines was questioned.

City, in comparison, have fewer workload worries. The City coach made one adjustment from the previous win over Everton with Hemp making her initial starting appearance since healing from a physical setback.

Dominant First Half

Second Half

The clearest adjustment came from the United manager at the interval as Malard came on for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was futile to change the course of the contest. Ex- Manchester City player Park came nearest, hitting the woodwork, but the away team were offensively poor and were unable to register a single shot on target.

The hosts, meanwhile, could have increased their lead when a delightful Miedema long ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it did not affect the result to the winning team. Previously unable to defeat any side who placed above them last season, Jeglertz’s side now have victories against Arsenal and United to put them in a favorable situation after nine games.
